HC Deb 23 August 1945 vol 413 c846W
Mr. Collins

asked the Minister of Supply and of Aircraft Production if he will arrange with the American Army Authorities in this country to purchase the large stocks of surplus clothing which in many cases are at present being burned.

Mr. Leonard

The question of disposal in this country of stores, including clothing, surplus to U.S. military requirements is under constant review in consultation with the U.S. authorities. My information is that all reported instances of alleged destruction of Army materials have been thoroughly investigated by the U.S. Inspector General of Base Headquarters. In every instance these investigations have shown that destruction of Army property has been carried out strictly in accordance with regulations. A direct order has been issued to U.S. troops prohibiting the destruction of tangible property, personal or otherwise. If my hon. Friend will supply me with sufficient information to identify any instance in which surplus clothing has been burned, I shall be glad to make inquiries.
