HC Deb 21 August 1945 vol 413 c470W
Captain C. Smith

asked the Secretary of State for War, in view of the housing shortage, whether he is satisfied that the fullest use is being made of married quarters in barracks for the purposes for which they were intended; whether he will discourage their use for any other purpose, such as ordinary accommodation for troops; and whether he will consider any proposals put forward by local authorities in areas where such quarters cannot be used by the families of soldiers, but might be used by the local authority to relieve the housing shortage.

Mr. Lawson

During the war it became necessary to use married quarters as normal troop accommodation. They are now being re-allotted as married quarters as rapidly as possible, but this must necessarily be a gradual process owing to the general shortage of troop accommodation. It is most unlikely that there will be any areas in which the quarters cannot be used by soldiers' families as soon as they can be vacated by troops.
