asked the Minister of Health what was the average cost per out-patient and in-patient in the hospitals controlled by the L.C.C. and by hospitals controlled by the county councils of Lancashire, Leicestershire and Kent in the last complete financial year before the war.

Appended is such of the information requested by my hon. Friend as is available in respect of in-patients. He will see that I have included not only hospitals strictly so called but also public assistance institutions providing largely for the sick. I regret that no corresponding information is available as regards out-patients.

The following information is extracted from Parts I and II of the Costing Returns for the year ended 31st March, 1938, published in 1939.
