HC Deb 23 June 1944 vol 401 c488W
Mr. Hutchinson

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is satisfied that the delivery of mail to the troops serving in Burma and India is now as expeditious as the exigencies of the Service there permit.

Sir J. Grigg

The time taken by air mail letters to reach the bases in India or Burma has been reduced since January from an average of 10½ days to 6 days. The average time for surface mail has been reduced from 54 to 43 days. The further time taken by mail to reach troops from the bases depends on the location of the troops in question and the operational situation at the time. Any further improvements which are possible will be introduced, but I am generally satisfied that the present service is as fast as present circumstances permit.
