HC Deb 09 February 1944 vol 396 cc1781-2W
Mr. A. Edwards

asked the President of the Board of Education whether records have been made of the percentage of children in attendance at elementary and secondary schools, respectively, who have been subjected to medical inspection; and, if so, what that percentage was for the last five years for which the records are available.

Mr. Butler

The following table shows the numbers of children seen at routine medical inspections in each of the last five years for which returns are available, expressed as percentages of the actual number of children on the registers of those schools on a particular day in the year in question:

Year. Public Elementary Schools. Year. Grant-Aided Secondary Schools.
1938 33.3 1934 54.2
1939 26.2* 1935 55.5
1940 34.7 1936 53.5
1941 34.4 1937 52.2
1942 35.2 1938 55.4
* The low percentage in this year was due to the effects of evacuation.
