HC Deb 21 December 1944 vol 406 cc1982-3W
Mr. O. Evans

asked the Minister of Supply whether any investigation has been made since the outbreak of war into the possibility of developing mineral resources of certain areas in Wales, particularly North Cardiganshire; if so, whether any action has been or is going to be taken; and whether the results of such investigations are available for publication.

Mr. Peat

The possibility of developing the metalliferous minerals of North Cardiganshire for war purposes was investigated by mining experts on behalf of of the Ministry of Supply in the early years of the war, with special reference to the production of zinc. The conclusion was reached that, owing to the length of time and heavy expenditure needed for development, the scarcity of mining labour and the doubts as to the value of the minerals remaining, the re-opening of these deposits, most of which had not been worked since the last century, was not a practical war measure. Accordingly no further Government action was taken in regard to their exploitation. The technical information in the possession of the Ministry of Supply would be made available to the mineral owners or to any other interested parties, if desired.
