HC Deb 21 December 1944 vol 406 c1988W
Mr. Salt

asked the Lord President of the Council if he can give any indication of the pre-war and current annual expenditure of the Government and private interests upon all aspects of building research and what relation this expenditure bears to the pre-war and estimated post-war annual expenditure upon building in Great Britain.

Mr. Attlee

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for Maidstone (Mr. Bossom) on 7th December. I have no information about the expenditure by private interests upon building research. Before the war the annual expenditure on building in Great Britain was of the order of £400,000,000. In a peace-time year after the war if 1,250,000 men are in the industry this figure can rise to about £700,000,000.
