HC Deb 21 December 1944 vol 406 cc1989-90W
Sir J. Mellor

asked the Minister of Information if he will give the names of the present Governors of the B.B.C.; for what individual merit, record and association each Governor was appointed; and to what extent they direct the political policy of the Corporation.

Mr. Bracken

The names of the present Governors of the B.B.C. are as follow:

  • Sir Allan Powell, G.B.E., D.L. (Chairman).
  • G. H. G. Millis, D.S.O., M.C. (Vice-Chairman).
  • Lady Violet Bonham-Carter.
  • Sir Ian Fraser, C.B.E., M.P.
  • J. H. Mallon, C.H., LL.D.
  • A. H. Mann, C.H., LL.D.
  • Hon. Harold Nicolson, C.M.G., M.P.

It is the policy of His Majesty's Government that Governors should be selected from persons of wide outlook and considerable experience of affairs, and the present Governors were appointed in pursuance of this policy. The Governors act as trustees to the public and Parliament for the maintenance of the integrity and high standards of broadcasting; but the Corporation does not adopt or espouse any political policy. The political policy of those special services that are directed to enemy or enemy occupied territories is a matter for His Majesty's Government.
