Smithersasked the Minister of Town and Country Planning whether, when framing legislation to empower local authorities to purchase land at the 2192W 1939 value, he will undertake to give effect to the consideration that since 1939 the purchasing power of the pound sterling has depreciated, the cost of living has proportionately risen and that landowners must have a reserve of capital to recondition farms and cottages after the war.
