HC Deb 23 September 1943 vol 392 c419W
Sir R. Gower

asked the Minister of Agriculture why he has decided to stop recruiting for the Women's Land Army; and how far the number recruited since the start of the war has obviated the calling up of the wives and daughters of farmers for work other than on the land or for the landworkers?

Mr. Hudson

As indicated by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour on 29th July, the Government decided that volunteering for the Women's Land Army and the Women's Auxiliary Services should be temporarily suspended in order to meet the urgent needs of the aircraft industry. Farmers' wives and daughters are not called up if engaged full-time on agricultural work or essential domestic work in farmhouses. That position has not been affected by the recruitment of the Women's Land Army.
