HC Deb 22 September 1943 vol 392 c235W
Mr. Parker

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food what is the significance of the fruit content descriptions applied by jam makers to their products; whether any measures are taken to guarantee the accuracy of these descriptions; and, if not, whether he will consider requiring from the owners of all jam factories a statutory declaration of the percentage of fruit and sugar contained in their jams?

Mr. Mabane

The descriptions and standards for jam are at present governed by the terms of the Jam and Marmalade (Maximum Prices) Order, S.R. & O. No. 2482 of 1942, as amended. The adherence of manufacturers to these standards, which include minimum fruit and soluble solids contents, is checked from time to time by the analysis of samples taken by officers of my Department and of other public authorities.
