HC Deb 22 September 1943 vol 392 c259W
Mr. Graham White

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he is in a position to make a further statement with regard to the arrangements for the relief of famine conditions in India and, in particular, with regard to the conditions in urban areas?

Mr. Amery

Besides the measures taken for the improvement of the food position over India as a whole, rationing plans are already in operation in Bombay City and some other large towns. They are to be extended to a total of some 70 such towns including Calcutta, where rationing is expected to be in operation in November. Relief measures are in operation in Calcutta and over parts of Bengal. I hope to make a fuller statement on the subject within the next few days.
