Mr. Graham Whiteasked the Secretary of State for India whether he is in a position to make a further statement with regard to the arrangements for the relief of famine conditions in India and, in particular, with regard to the conditions in urban areas?
§ Mr. AmeryBesides the measures taken for the improvement of the food position over India as a whole, rationing plans are already in operation in Bombay City and some other large towns. They are to be extended to a total of some 70 such towns including Calcutta, where rationing is expected to be in operation in November. Relief measures are in operation in Calcutta and over parts of Bengal. I hope to make a fuller statement on the subject within the next few days.
