asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food why the Minister of Food recently announced that British Restaurants will continue after the war, having regard to his assurance on 12th January, 1942, to a deputation from the catering industry that he did not anticipate the continued existence of British Restaurants after the emergency?

So far as I am aware the only statement of Government policy as to the position of British Restaurants after the war was given in a reply by my predecessor to the hon. Member for East Wolverhampton (Mr. Mander) on 22nd January, 1942 [OFFICIAL REPORT, Vol. 377, cols. 434–435]. The opinions expressed by my Noble Friend on 12th January, 1942, and on 4th July, 1943, are both consistent with that statement of policy.
