HC Deb 28 October 1943 vol 393 cc400-1W
Mr. Bellenger

asked the Secretary of State for War what was the date from which issue of Colonial allowance for officers and other ranks serving in Malta was first paid?

Sir J. Grigg

Officers, and married warrant officers and staff-sergeants in Malta have drawn Colonial allowance since 1931. The rates were fixed on a carefully prepared budget and it was considered that ranks below staff-sergeant serving in Malta did not require the allowance. Owing to the course of operations, the Egypt rates of Colonial allowance were extended to Malta in July of this year and the allowance is consequently now drawn by all ranks.
