asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many classes in Scottish schools had over 40 and how many had over 50 pupils on the latest date for which figures are available?

On 31st March, 1939, the latest date for which statistics are available, there were in Scottish schools 6,127 primary classes and 223 post-primary classes with over 40 but not more than 50 pupils on the roll. At the same date the numbers of classes with over 50 pupils on the roll were 197 primary and three post-primary.
