HC Deb 14 October 1943 vol 392 c1089W
Mr. Barnes

asked the Minister of Production the total number of newspapers that the 11½ per cent. increase in newsprint will make available for circulation; whether he was consulted and authorised this increase; and what were the reasons advanced for the expansion of this industry at this period of the war?

Mr. Garro Jones

The total number of newspapers that will be available after the recent increase in the supply of paper is about 19 millions day, an increase of about 2,000,000 a day. This increase was authorised by my right hon. Friend, to meet the heavy demand for newspapers, particularly for the Forces.
