HC Deb 14 October 1943 vol 392 cc1086-7W
Flight-Lieutenant Challen

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the advertisements in the newspapers asking those familiar with specified alien applicants for British naturalisation to send in full details of the information they possess to the Home Office; and whether, as such advertisements give the impression that it is possible during the war to take out naturalisation papers, he will give wide publicity to the suspension of applications for naturalisation, except in exceptional cases, during the war period and thus save the waste of time, money and labour caused through the continuous insertion of these advertisements?

Mr. H. Morrison

I entirely agree that the publication of newspaper notices by persons whose applications for naturalisation cannot be considered at the present time is undesirable; such notices are wasteful and misleading. With a view to checking the practice I arranged some months ago for the insertion in the forms which applicants have to obtain of a notification that an advertisement should not be inserted in the Press until the applicant is told by the Home Secretary that he is prepared to consider the application. I hope that further publicity may be given to the matter by my hon. and gallant Friend's Question and this reply.
