HC Deb 14 October 1943 vol 392 c1076W
Mr. Mathers

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware of the dissatisfaction amongst Jamaican labourers in the United States of America who state they have suffered discrimination at the hands of local shopkeepers, and have been paid less than the prevailing wage-rate, thus violating agreements to the contrary; and whether he will make representations to the United States authorities with the view of ending such conditions?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

My right hon. and gallant Friend is aware that there was dissatisfaction amongst some of the Jamaican labourers employed in certain parts of the United States soon after their arrival there. The complaints were investigated and remedied and, according to a report made in the middle of August, conditions were satisfactory.
