HC Deb 11 November 1943 vol 393 c1301W
Mr. Lindsay

asked the President of the Board of Education how many youth organisers are now being employed by local education authorities; how many are being assisted by authorities in conjunction with voluntary bodies; how many organisers of young farmers are being employed or assisted by such authorities; now many drama organisers are so employed; and what is the total budget for these purposes on which his Department pays grant-aid?

Mr. Butler

The number of youth service organisers employed by local education authorities is about 200. I am unable to state how many of these are employed jointly by authorities and voluntary organisations, though I am aware that such appointments have been made in a few instances. Twenty-five organisers of Young Farmers' Clubs are employed by the National Federation with the aid of direct grant from the Board, and 11 (including two appointments about to be made) are employed by local authorities. Drama organisers are known to be employed in the areas of at least 14 counties and county boroughs, either by the local education authority in association with the joint committee for Drama of the Carnegie United Kingdom Trust, or under other arrangements. The information asked for in the last part of the Question is not readily available and could not be given without special inquiries.
