HC Deb 10 November 1943 vol 393 cc1169-70W
Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what action is being taken respecting the grievances expressed by the Nigerian Union of Teachers in regard to salaries, which are lower than those paid to lower civil servants and to cost of living allowances, which are also lower; and whether their proposal for the setting up of statutory local education committees will be accepted and implemented?

Colonel Stanley

It has recently been agreed that the salary scale for non-Government certificated teachers in grant-aided schools should be improved so as to bring it closer to the scale paid to Government teachers, which is similar to that paid to lower civil servants. With regard to the last part of the Question, I would refer to my reply given in the House on 21st July. I am satisfied that everything possible will be done to facilitate the establishment of local committees with power to levy education taxes.
