§ Mr. Jacksonasked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in view of the healthy condition of Italian prisoners in this country and the probability of a food shortage in the near future, he will take steps to have discipline tightened up among these prisoners so that they could make a larger contribution by their increased work to the present effort for maximum food production?
531W
§ Sir J. GriggI have been asked to reply. Commandants have instructions to investigate all cases of slackness which are reported to them and to take disciplinary action when appropriate. I am satisfied that these instructions are generally observed, but employers must report to the Commandant concerned incidents at the time when they occur; this is not always done. The number of prisoners punished for offences relating to their work has averaged 5 per cent. during the last six months.
