asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the amount paid from rates and taxes in social services for the years 1900, 1913, 1923, 1933 and the latest available date?

Information for 1913 is not available, but with the substitution of 1910 for that year, the following table shows thetotal expenditure on social services (other than expenditure out of loans or capital receipts) in the respective years:
