HC Deb 09 June 1943 vol 390 c722W
Mrs. Cazalet Keir

asked the President of the Board of Education whether, in view of the increasing absenteeism amongst schoolchildren, he will consider allowing school bells to be rung in order to remind children of the time?

Mr. Ede

I understand from my right hon. Friend the Minister of Home Security that it is now permissible for school bells, other than hand bells, to be rung to summon children to school, provided that the bell would not be liable to be mistaken for a signal for any other purpose. In any case of doubt the chief constable should first be consulted by the school authorities.
