HC Deb 21 July 1943 vol 391 c915W
Major Mills

asked the Minister of Agriculture what is the live membership of the National Union of Agricultural Workers; and what percentage this is of the total number of regular male workers on farms?

Mr. T. Williams

I am informed by the National Union of Agricultural Workers that their present membership is between 85,000 and 90,000, including a certain number of women, but excluding members serving with the Forces. Statistics of labour employed are not being disclosed during the war, but on the basis of the 1939 figures, the present Union Membership would represent about 20 per cent. of the total regular male workers aged 18 and over, employed on farms in England and Wales.
