HC Deb 21 July 1943 vol 391 cc901-2W
Sir W. James

asked the President of the Board of Education whether, in planning future schools, he will ensure that, for the physical well-being of the pupils, adequate grass fields and recreation spaces are, wherever possible, made available?

Mr. Butler

Provision of adequate grass fields and recreation spaces with a view to the physical well-being of the pupils has for many years been among the principal objectives of the Board and local education authorities in planning new schools and improving old ones. My hon. and gallant Friend may rest assured that the Board will continue to attach the highest importance to this provision.

Sir W. James

asked the President of the Board of Education whether in order to improve the inadequate recreational facilities of many existing schools situated in towns, he will obtain priority claim on bombed sites near these schools, which are suitable for conversion to grass playing fields?

Mr. Butler

The utilisation of blitzed sites is a matter in which a number of other Government Departments are interested as well as the Board of Education. The Board are, however, in constant touch with the Ministry of Town and Country Planning to ensure that educational requirements receive full consideration.
