HC Deb 08 July 1943 vol 390 c2277W
Mr. Liddall

asked the Minister of Health who is responsible for the supervision of the evacuated children of Gibraltarian British subjects now in this country; and what educational facilities are provided?

Mr. E. Brown

The number of children among the Gibraltar evacuees who were not accompanied by adult relatives is quite small and special arrangements are made by my Department for their care. As regards the second part of the Question, I would draw my hon. Friend's attention to the reply given on 10th September, 1942, to my hon. Friend the Member for Moseley (Sir P. Hannon) of which I am sending him a copy.

Mr. Liddall

asked the Minister of Health the total number of civilians evacuated from Gibraltar in 1940; how many of them were born and bred on the Rock and how many were Spaniards; and whether he is satisfied that the loyal British subjects, of all classes, now under the supervision of His Ministry have no just grounds for complaint?

Mr. Brown

I am making inquiries on the first parts of the Question and will let my hon. Friend know. Roughly the facts are that some 12,000 evacuees have been cared for in this country for nearly three years, in which time more than 400 babies have been born in the centres. On the last part I have made every endeavour to ensure that the machinery as to complaints should work well, but if my hon. Friend has any particular case in mind I shall be glad if he will let me know.
