HC Deb 26 January 1943 vol 386 c378W
Mr. David Adams

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware of the protests in the Legislative Council of Sierra Leone and elsewhere of paramount chiefs, that they are frequently treated by district commissioners with discourtesy and even violence before their subjects; and, as the policy of the Colonial Office is that paramount chiefs remain heads of native administration with the district commissioners as advisers, will he end these grievances and secure the requisite change of attitude by some officers towards these ruling chiefs?

Colonel Stanley

I have seen certain newspaper references to this subject, but have had no report from the Governor. I am asking him to furnish me with one: and when I receive it, I will communicate further with the hon. Member. If the hon. Member has any further information on this subject I shall be grateful if he will send it to me.
