HC Deb 21 January 1943 vol 386 cc311-2W
Mr. Groves

asked the Minister of Labour what grounds of personal hardship are available to a doctor as reasons for his not being called up for service as financial hardship, resulting in the break-up of the family and the closing down and consequential disappearance of his practice, is not a plea which hardship tribunals are entitled to entertain?

Mr. Bevin

Medical practitioners who have been selected by the Central Medical War Committee for service in the Forces have the opportunity of applying for postponement of liability under the National Service Acts on the ground that their immediate calling up would cause exceptional hardship. Applications are considered in accordance with the principles laid down in the National Service (Postponement Certificates) Regulations, 1939–1941, and there is in certain circumstances a right of appeal to the umpire from the decision of the Hardship Committee.
