Brigadier-General Brownasked the Minister of Agriculture what are the number of acres in England and Wales farmed by owner-occupiers; the number of acres let and farmed by tenants; and the number of acres farmed by the State and local authorities?
Mr. HudsonInquiries as to the acreages of land farmed respectively by tenants and owner-occupiers have not been made by my Department for some years; but for all practical purposes the proportions may be taken as roughly two-thirds tenants and one-third owner-occupiers. These proportions relate to a total acreage (excluding common land) of 28,822,745 acres in England and Wales in 1939. Figures for the acreage of land farmed by the State and local authorities are not available and could not be compiled without more extensive inquiries than I would feel justified in instituting at present.
