HC Deb 17 February 1943 vol 386 cc1744-5W
Captain P. Macdonald

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that naval officers and other ranks stationed in such places as Bermuda and the West Indies receive a special Colonial allowance and also are granted a measure of relief from Income Tax, whereas naval officers and other ranks stationed in Iceland and Greenland do not receive this allowance or Income Tax relief; and whether he can take steps to have this anomaly removed?

Mr. Alexander

Colonial allowance is granted to meet the extra expense of those serving on shore in places abroad where the cost of living is abnormally high, so as to place them in relatively the same financial position as their colleagues afloat. If the hon. and gallant Member has any evidence that these principles are not being applied at any of the places named in the Question, I shall be happy to give it my consideration.
