HC Deb 16 February 1943 vol 386 cc1609-10W
Mr. Boothby

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will take steps to organise the maximum possible supply of casual labour to meet the requirements of the forthcoming harvest in the North of Scotland?

Mr. Johnston

Plans for the provision of the maximum possible supply of labour for agriculture in the North, as well as throughout the rest of Scotland, are already well in hand. They include schemes for increasing the forces of regular supplementary labour such as the Women's Land Army, prisoners of war and agricultural executive committees' gangs. In addition to these forces, we are endeavouring to organise students and the many other thousands of extra hands needed for harvesting the grain and potato crops. These plans are being developed in close co-operation with the Ministry of Labour and National Service.
