HL Deb 09 February 1943 vol 125 cc981-2WA
LORD MAMHEAD

asked His Majesty's Government whether women are liable to be conscripted for war service in the United States of America or in any of His Majesty's Dominions apart from Great Britain and whether it is the policy of His Majesty's Government that this policy should continue to exist only in Great Britain.

THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (VISCOUNT CRANBORNE) (Lord Cecil)

The policy adopted in the Dominions is of course a matter for His Majesty's Governments in the Dominions. I understand that the present practice is as follows. In Canada, Australia, and the Union of South Africa and in the United States of America women are not liable to be conscripted. In Canada some age groups have been called upon to register and their choice of employment is subject to control. In New Zealand also some age groups of women have been registered and younger women are liable to be drafted into essential work. In all these countries women's services have been formed from volunteers and women are also replacing men in civilian work and thus releasing men for the Armed Forces.

House adjourned.
