HC Deb 04 February 1943 vol 386 cc1067-8W
Major York

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food the number of producer-retailers retailing under 750 gallons of milk per day, milk retailers retailing under 750 gallons, between 750 gallons and 1,500 gallons and over 1,500 gallons of milk per day, and combine wholesale-retailers included in the second category operating on 1st January, 1942, 30th September, 1942, and 1st January, 1943, respectively?

Mr. Mabane

The total number of producer-retailers in England and Wales is approximately 60,000. With few exceptions they sell under 750 gallons of milk daily. Claims from retailers and wholesaler-retailers for the self-wholesaling or wholesaling allowances which became payable on the 1st October last have so far been approved in 232 cases, including 66 applicants Selling between 750 and 1,500 gallons daily, and 166 selling more than 1,500 gallons daily. There are, however, a considerable number of claims still under examination, so that it is not yet possible to give full information showing the classification of milk retailers according to the volume of their sales. I am not clear what my hon. and gallant Friend means by the term "combine-wholesale-retailers." Information is not available for the period prior to the 1st October, 1942.
