HC Deb 04 February 1943 vol 386 c1069W
Major Thornton-Kemsley

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether, although fewer high quality cattle are required to produce any given quantity of meat than heavy-boned rough types, his Department, in making payments, takes into account gross weight alone; and whether, as feeders of high class beef are, under the existing grading system, supplying meat to his Ministry for which they are receiving no return in respect of quality, he will reconsider the system of payment in such cases?

Mr. Mabane

The payments made by my Department for fat cattle are not based, as my hon. and gallant Friend appears to think, on gross weight only but also on the estimated killing-out percentage for each individual animal. My Noble Friend regrets that it would not be practicable, in existing circumstances, to introduce a further factor, such as the breed or quality of the animal, in determining the amount payable to the producer.
