HC Deb 16 December 1943 vol 395 cc1715-6W
Mr. Marshall

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware that the Sheffield Education Committee has in its primary schools 240 classes with more than 50 children in each, covering one quarter of the entire primary school population; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this state of overcrowding?

Mr. Butler

The answer to the first part of the Question is in the affirmative. The local education authority have this matter under active consideration with a view to taking appropriate action to reduce the number of large classes which have resulted from war damage and other difficulties of staffing and accommodation.
