HC Deb 09 December 1943 vol 395 c1158W
Mr. Parker

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the Romford Council have been informed that in future their "holidays at home" programme will not be exempt under the Finance Act, 1924; and whether he will continue the exemptions from Entertainments Duty given hitherto in order to enable local authorities to carry out the Government's policy of restricting travel?

Sir J. Anderson

I am advised that the provision to which my hon. Friend refers is not applicable to the entertainments which he has in mind, and I have of course no power to authorise exemptions other than those enacted by Parliament. I would, however, remind my hon. Friend that other statutory provisions exist under which entertainments may qualify for exemption from the Duty.
