HC Deb 04 August 1943 vol 391 cc2320-1W
Mr. David Adams

asked the Secretary of State for War why, in view of the scarcity of leather, officers of both sexes are still allowed to purchase and wear leather belts now unnecessary, and members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service to purchase and use leather belts not essential for their equipment?

Sir J. Grigg

The wearing of Sam Browne belts has always been optional for officers of both sexes and no change in this policy is contemplated. The Ministry of Production have been informed that no objection will be raised to any curtailment of supplies of leather for Sam Browne belts which the Ministry of Production consider it necessary to impose at the present time in the interests of other more vital leather goods. Leather belts are not worn by auxiliaries of the Auxiliary Territorial Service.
