§ Mr. AsshetonApart from the relatively small number of Regius Professorships, appointments to University chairs are a matter for the authorities of the University concerned. So far as my information goes, however, the position is not generally as stated in the first part of the Question,1404W and I have no doubt that when it is considered necessary to fill a vacant chair, the claims of candidates absent from the University on various forms of national service receive proper consideration.
