HC Deb 15 April 1943 vol 388 cc1403-4W
Mr. Moelwyn Hughes

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware that most University chairs now falling vacant are being promptly filled; and whether he will take action to secure that in appropriate cases appointments should be delayed until after the war to enable the applications of potential candidates now with the Forces to be considered?

Mr. Assheton

Apart from the relatively small number of Regius Professorships, appointments to University chairs are a matter for the authorities of the University concerned. So far as my information goes, however, the position is not generally as stated in the first part of the Question, and I have no doubt that when it is considered necessary to fill a vacant chair, the claims of candidates absent from the University on various forms of national service receive proper consideration.
