§ The Attorney-GeneralThe cost of administering the Act is approximately £42,000 a year, of which approximately £29,000 is in respect of salaries of officers seconded from other Government Departments. Protection orders have been made in 597 cases, but in 59 of these cases the court has refused to make an adjustment order and has revoked the protection order. In' 278 of these cases an adjustment order has been made, the remaining 260 cases being still under investigation. Up to 1st July, 1942, schemes had been approved in 123 cases, and 121 other applications for schemes were under investigation at that date. Up to the same date, adjustment officers had given advice and assistance in 1,079 other cases. In many of these cases there was only one creditor, who often proved to be sympathetic on being satisfied by the adjustment officer that the case was one of genuine hardship.
