HC Deb 09 September 1942 vol 383 c168W
Mr. Thorne

asked the President of the Board of Trade why five-watt lamps are not being made, as they would be the means of saving electricity; and what action he intends taking in the matter?

Captain Waterhouse

The production of lamps of less than 15 watts involves so much skilled labour and machine capacity that, in consultation with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Fuel and Power, my right hon. Friend has decided that their manufacture is not justified by the very small saving of fuel which their use would effect. The output of lamps of 15 and 25 wattage cannot, for technical reasons, be increased. I am asked by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Fuel and Power to say that within these limits householders are asked to substitute lower wattage lamps when replacement is necessary. But the greatest economy of electric light will be realised if everyone remembers to switch off the light as soon as the need for it has passed and if no one uses two lamps when one is enough.
