Mr. Pearson

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Planning whether he will give a precise statement of the powers of the Ministry's planning officer in Wales?

Mr. H. Strauss

In order to facilitate co-operation with local authorities in town and country planning, my Noble Friend has appointed planning officers, with headquarters at convenient centres, who will be available for consultation by the local authorities, and also to advise the Ministry regarding problems arising in their areas. The planning officer in Wales, whose office is in Cardiff, will keep my Noble Friend informed of the problems of the authorities in Wales, and will keep those authorities informed of the requirements of national policy as it is developed.

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Planning when legislation will be introduced to set up a central planning authority and for the amendment of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1932; and whether local authorities will first be consulted?

As I informed the House on 29th April last, consideration of the reports of the Scott and Uthwatt Committees, which have only recently been received by my Noble Friend, is necessary before decisions on these matters can be reached. It is proposed to consult the associations of local authorities and the London County Council before legislation to amend the Town and Country Planning Act, 1932, is introduced.
