HC Deb 08 September 1942 vol 383 c75W
Sir R. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many British subjects there are remaining in Italy; and whether the same opportunities for their return to this country, if they so wish, can be arranged as was done in the case of British people in France?

Mr. Law

The number is believed to be about 2,800. Their departure from Italy and journey to this country have been hampered partly by the regulations imposed by the authorities in the countries through which they would pass and partly by the unwillingness of many of them to leave Italy. The question of the delay in the granting of visas has been taken up with the Governments concerned and a number of concessions have been secured.
