§ Mr. Joseph Hendersonasked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that the licensed bars of the Red Lion Hotel, the Friars Tavern, the County Hotel, the Central Hotel, and the Crown and Mitre Hotel, at Carlisle, are placed out of bounds for the warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and other ranks serving in the Army in Carlisle and district; and, in view of the fact that this order is resented by the men concerned, will he take immediate steps to countermand it and to see that no such tendency to discriminate is permitted to continue in the higher circles of the Army administration in this area?
§ Sir J. GriggI am not aware that any part of the Red Lion Hotel at Carlisle is out of bounds to warrant officers, noncommissioned officers and other ranks, but one room in the Central Hotel, one in the Crown and Mitre Hotel, the upper floor in the Friars Tavern and a cocktail bar in the County Hotel, have, I understand, been reserved for more than a year to the use of officers. The rest of 59W each of these hotels remains open to other ranks as do some 60 other bars in Carlisle. I see no ground for interfering with these local arrangements.
