HC Deb 14 October 1942 vol 383 c1648W
Major Owen

asked the President of the Board of Education how many pupils have been awarded State bursaries in science on the recommendation of headmasters without having passed the higher certificate; and the names of the schools from which these pupils have been selected?

Mr. Butler

This information cannot be supplied without a disproportionate expenditure of time and labour. Every application for a State bursary was scrutinised by the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and other University representatives who, with officers of the Board, were responsible for the selection and allocation of State bursaries, and I am satisfied that the committee's selection was careful and impartial.
