HC Deb 14 October 1942 vol 383 cc1635-6W
Sir T. Moore

asked the Home Secretary whether it is proposed to carry on with the conscription of women as fire watchers while substantial numbers of men of military age in the Civil Service, the British Broadcasting Corporation and local authorities remain exempt?

Miss Wilkinson

Yes, Sir. Even allowing for the tightening up of the orders relating to men the present and prospective shortage of fire guards leaves my right hon. Friend no alternative. But my hon. and gallant Friend is incorrect in thinking that the three classes of person to whom he refers are exempt from fire prevention duties. They are liable under the Government Premises Order or the Business Premises Order for duty when compulsory schemes are in force at the places where they work and if, because of a voluntary scheme, they are not required there they can be required to serve under the Compulsory Enrolment Order if it is in force in the area where they live.
