§ Mr. Henderson Stewartasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he is aware of the dissatisfaction felt by workmen employed on roads in Scotland on account of the considerable disparities in wages and conditions of work in different coun- 1374W ties, and the lack of uniformity in the designations of the various classes of workmen, foremen, overseers and others; and whether he will consider framing rules for general application on these matters?
§ Mr. Noel-BakerI am aware that there are variations in wage rates arising from the differing conditions in different counties, but I have not heard of any dissatisfaction on this account. Any matters of this kind would normally be considered by the Joint Industrial Council for the local authorities' services in Scotland. I may add that any grants to local authorities from the Road Fund are subject to observance of the Fair Wages Clause.
