HC Deb 01 October 1942 vol 383 c959W
Mr. R. Morgan

asked the Home Secretary how many towns still refuse to open their cinemas on Sundays for Servicemen although desired to do so by the military authorities: and whether, before the winter arrives, he proposes to override these adverse decisions in all cases?

Mr. H. Morrison

I have only heard of two or three instances in which a local council, having received a certificate from the competent authority under Defence Regulation 42B, has decided not to apply for power to open cinemas on Sunday. Over 270 orders have been submitted to and approved by Parliament. In a matter of this kind I do not think it would be desirable to disregard the views of the representative local council.
