Graham-Littleasked the President of the Board of Education how many applications were received in response to Circular 1593 with reference to State bursaries in science; how many were awarded, by whom and upon what basis the selection was made, as no mention was made in Circular 1593 of a competitive basis; and what steps he proposes to take with regard to those applicants who were unsuccessful?
§ Mr. ButlerThe number of applications received for State bursaries this year was 2,809; 1640 awards were offered. The selection was made by a committee of Vice-Chancellors and other university representatives with officers of the Board. As regards the basis of selection, I am sending the hon. Member a copy of an answer given to the hon. and gallant Member for Carnarvon (Major Owen) on 7th October. All the unsuccessful candidates for State bursaries have been invited to apply for the newly-established engineering cadetships.
