HC Deb 25 November 1942 vol 385 c735W
Mr. De la Bère

asked the Minister of Production whether he can give some particulars regarding the recent appointment he has made of a paper economy committee which was formed for the purpose of obtaining a reduction in the consumption of paper; and, whilst recognising the need for all reasonable economies, will be bear in mind the surplus amount of straw which is available for paper manufacturers throughout the country?

Mr. Garro Jones

As announced in the Press on 22nd October, the Paper Economy Committee has been set up to examine all cases of excessive use of paper and take the necessary steps to effect economy. I am arranging for a copy of the notice to be circulated in the OFFICIAL REPORT. The limiting factor at present in the use of straw for papermaking is plant capacity in the straw-using mills. Every practicable step is being taken to increase that capacity.
