HC Deb 17 November 1942 vol 385 cc222-3W
Major Kimball

asked the right hon. and gallant Member for Rye, as representing the Forestry Commissioners, whether they are now prepared to meet the claim of Mr. Alexander Maclean, of Borgie, Skerray, Sutherland, for compensation for the loss of some 30 cheviot ewes, in view of the facts that his sheep were on No. 10 holding on the east side of the Forestry Commission's plantation and were destroyed, by a forest fire last April, which entered the plantation from the west side and subsequently spread out to the east from the plantation; that no protective belts, fire traces, had been burnt in 1942; and that the forester gave no direct warnings to neighbouring farmers?

Sir G. Courthope

Mr. Alexander Maclean's solicitors were informed in June last that the Forestry Commission can admit no liability for loss sustained by him in the fire referred to. To this there is nothing I can add.
